Teach-Okay!

 

Teach-Okay is very similar to the  Turn & Talk to your partner technique.  Instead of always using open-ended prompts, students are repeating the gestures and the teaching points to their partners. One will speak first while they both use gestures, then the partner will talk while they both use gestures, and this will continue until I call them back with Class-Yes.

 

I also use this technique when I want to make sure the students have comprehended the skill that was just taught. I will say "teach your partner what you just learned about ______." During this time, I walk around the room and listen to what the students are discussing. Next, I call on volunteers to teach the class what they told their partners.

The gestures for starting Teach-Okay is clapping and saying "Teach" while the students clap and reply "Okay". Just as I do with Class-Yes, mix it up to keep it fresh & fun!!
